The comm-link in Jared’s helmet sputtered into life, “I’m getting some real high Entropy readings on the PEM here.” Magda’s voice sounded nervous.Switching his HUD over to Magda’s life sign feed, Jared could see her elevated Adrenaline levels, a dangerous thing in a Hermes series Entropy Stalker, with their already elevated heart rate.
“Calm down Magda, your adrenaline’s climbing.Where are you now?” He asked, checking his own Psychic Emanations meter. The readings made no sense. The Entropy Level had been an alarming 4 only a second ago, now it was 1.Nothing he knew of dissipated Entropy that quickly.Nothing except an Entropy stalker that is, and all of his team were accounted for – except Magda.
“I’m in the elevator, coming back down now.Nothing much of interest, except the entropy levels were real screwy, kept jumping all over the place, but now it’s steadily climbing. It’s up to 17!” Her voice was strained, but calmer, her adrenaline levels were steadying.
“Okay, feed your PEM readout to my HUD, and get your weapon ready. Is Soren with you? What floor are you on?”
“I’m with her in the lift” Soren’s voice cut in, “I’m getting a real bad feeling about this!” It was always best to take Soren’s feelings seriously, it was the same with all Cassandra series Entropy Stalkers. The higher percentage of alien DNA made them keenly psychic.
“We are on the 13th floor” Magda’s voice added.
“Say again…?It sounded like you said 13th floor?...That can’t be right… There is no 13th floor in this hotel…Come in… Magda? Soren?Come in…COME IN!” Scrolling his HUD read-out through his team, Jared could find no connection to either. “Where the hell are you guys? The HUD has no record of your existence. COME IN!”
In the elevator Soren screamed. Magda’s PEM read 25,
“Jared, we have a full blown level 4 reality failure… Jared where are you?… come in…” From the corner of her eye Magda saw a third figure in the elevator, one that had not been there a moment ago
His grey, bloated flesh was criss-crossed with dark blood vessels, his large oversized lips seemed to ooze ichor, his empty eye sockets peered out of his bloated face and he grinned, an impossibly wide grin, full of shark’s teeth.
“Welcome to the 13th floor” he rasped
In “The Entropy Effect”, players play entropy stalkers, genetically engineered from captured human DNA, sent to Earth to undo the damage to reality caused by the disastrous failure of the experiments conducted by their alien masters, the Gubulon.
The Gubulon are an alien race gifted with psychic abilities. In an attempt to fully understand their psychic talents, they perform experiments crossbreeding their DNA with that of other species, examining the effects. One such race, the Starbeasts, proved to be such a successful crossbreed they escaped captivity, thwarting the Gubulon, and eluding easy capture. Starbeasts alter reality by existing within it, and cause strange events to arise. This alteration is caused by Entropy, leaked by young and adolescent Starbeasts, unable to control their psychic powers.
Entropy leaking into reality causes it to bend away from normal parameters, and Entropy Stalkers follow the resulting anomalies, tracking down the errant Starbeasts and re-establishing reality.
